EPF Contribution Formula & Explanation

The Employees Provident Fund (EPF / KWSP) is a mandatory retirement savings scheme in Malaysia. Monthly contributions are calculated as a percentage of your gross salary:

Total Contributions = (Salary × Employee Rate) + (Salary × Employer Rate)

Standard contribution rates are usually 11% for employees and 13% for employers (for salaries of RM5,000 or below). Your savings are allocated to designated accounts that earn annual dividends to help grow your retirement fund.

Calculation Example

If your monthly salary is RM5,000:

  • Employee Contribution (11%): RM5,000 × 0.11 = RM550
  • Employer Contribution (13%): RM5,000 × 0.13 = RM650
  • Total Monthly Contributions: RM1,200
  • In one year, you will save RM14,400 (excluding dividends).
